types of dental crowns and cost

Introduction

Dental crowns are a common dental restoration used to cover damaged or decayed teeth, restoring their shape, size, strength, and appearance. They play a crucial role in various dental procedures, from protecting weakened teeth to enhancing smiles. Understanding the different types of dental crowns and their applications can help individuals make informed decisions about their dental health.

When Are Dental Crowns Suggested?

Dental crowns are often recommended in various scenarios:

a. On Root Canal Done Tooth: Following a root canal procedure, a tooth may become weakened and susceptible to fractures. Placing a crown over the treated tooth provides added strength and protection, allowing for normal chewing function.

b. Smile Designing Cases: In cosmetic dentistry, dental crowns are utilized to enhance the appearance of teeth affected by discoloration, misalignment, or irregular shape, thereby contributing to smile makeovers.

c. Missing Tooth: Dental crowns are an integral part of dental bridges and dental implants. They serve as prosthetic replacements for missing teeth, restoring both function and aesthetics.

Types of Dental Crowns Available

There are various types of dental crowns available, each with its unique characteristics:

a. Metal Crowns: Made from alloys such as gold, nickel, or chromium, metal crowns are highly durable and require minimal tooth structure removal. However, their metallic appearance may not be aesthetically pleasing to some patients.

b. Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns (PFM): These crowns combine the strength of metal with the aesthetics of porcelain. They are suitable for both front and back teeth, offering a natural-looking appearance.

c. Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) Crowns: Utilizing advanced technology, DMLS crowns are fabricated from metal powder through a laser sintering process. They exhibit excellent strength and precision fit, making them ideal for posterior teeth.

d. Zirconia Crowns: Zirconia crowns are known for their superior strength, durability, and biocompatibility. They possess a translucent appearance similar to natural teeth, making them an excellent choice for both front and back teeth.

e. eMax Crowns: Made from lithium disilicate ceramic, eMax crowns are prized for their exceptional aesthetics, strength, and durability. They closely mimic the natural appearance of teeth and are commonly used for front teeth restorations.

Cost Comparison of Different Types of Dental Crowns

The cost of dental crowns varies depending on the material used and the complexity of the procedure. Generally, the cost comparison from least to most expensive is as follows: metal < porcelain fused to metal < DMLS < zirconia < eMax.

What Happens If a Crown Is Not Placed?

i. After Root Canal Treatment: Without a crown, a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment remains vulnerable to fracture and further damage. A crown provides necessary reinforcement, preventing potential complications.

ii. For Missing Teeth: Failure to replace missing teeth with crowns or prosthetic restorations can lead to various issues, including difficulty chewing, shifting of adjacent teeth, and bone loss in the jaw.

What Crowns Are Optimal for Front Teeth?

For front teeth restorations, aesthetics play a crucial role. Both porcelain fused to metal and all-ceramic crowns, such as eMax, are popular choices due to their natural appearance and ability to blend seamlessly with surrounding teeth.

Maintenance of Dental crowns

Proper care for dental crowns is essential to maintain their longevity and functionality. Regular oral hygiene practices such as brushing twice daily and flossing can help prevent plaque buildup around the crown margins, reducing the risk of decay and gum disease. It’s important to avoid biting down on hard objects or using teeth as tools to prevent damage to the crown.

Additionally, individuals with a habit of grinding or clenching their teeth should consider wearing a nightguard to protect their crowns from excessive force. Routine dental check-ups are crucial for monitoring the health of the crown and addressing any issues promptly. By practicing good oral hygiene habits and being mindful of habits that can impact the crown, individuals can ensure their dental crowns remain in optimal condition for years to come.

Conclusion

Dental crowns are versatile dental restorations that serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. With a variety of materials available, individuals can choose the most suitable option based on their specific needs and preferences. Whether it’s strengthening a weakened tooth or enhancing a smile, dental crowns play a vital role in maintaining optimal oral health.

Q: Are dental crowns painful to get?

A: The process of getting a dental crown typically involves numbing the tooth and surrounding area with local anesthesia, ensuring a comfortable experience for the patient.

happy holi

Introduction

As the vibrant festival of Holi approaches, excitement fills the air. Holi, known as the festival of colors, is celebrated with exuberance across India and other parts of the world. It marks the arrival of spring and symbolizes the victory of good over evil. Amidst the joyous atmosphere and colorful festivities, it’s crucial to prioritize dental care to ensure that your smile remains as radiant as the hues of the festival.

Pre-Holi Preparation: Protecting Your Teeth

Before diving into the festivities, it’s essential to prepare and safeguard your teeth. Start by ensuring that your teeth are clean and healthy. Schedule a dental check-up before Holi to address any existing dental issues and to receive personalized advice on maintaining oral hygiene during the festival.

Additionally, consider applying a thin layer of dental wax or petroleum jelly on your teeth to create a protective barrier against the colors. This simple step can prevent the colors from seeping into the crevices of your teeth and causing staining or damage.

General Face and Lips Care: Shielding Against Harmful Substances

Apart from dental care, it’s crucial to protect your face and lips during Holi. Apply a generous amount of moisturizer or coconut oil on your face and lips before stepping out to play with colors. This will create a barrier and make it easier to remove the colors later without causing irritation or dryness.

Natural Colors vs. Artificial Colors: Choosing Wisely

Opting for natural colors made from flowers, herbs, and other organic materials is not only environmentally friendly but also safer for your dental health. Natural colors are less likely to contain harmful chemicals that can cause staining or irritation to your teeth and gums.

On the other hand, artificial colors often contain abrasive substances and synthetic dyes that can erode the enamel of your teeth and lead to long-term damage. Therefore, prioritize natural colors when celebrating Holi to safeguard your dental health.

Staying Hydrated: Nourishing Your Teeth and Body

Amidst the excitement of Holi, it’s easy to forget to stay hydrated. However, maintaining adequate hydration is crucial for your overall health and dental well-being. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to flush out toxins and prevent dehydration. This will also help wash away any color residue from your mouth and teeth, reducing the risk of staining or damage.

Limit Your Sweet Intake: Minimizing Dental Risks

Sweets and delicacies are an integral part of Holi celebrations. While indulging in festive treats is enjoyable, it’s essential to consume them in moderation, especially those high in sugar content. Excessive sugar consumption can promote the growth of harmful bacteria in your mouth, leading to cavities and tooth decay. Instead, opt for healthier alternatives or rinse your mouth with water after consuming sweets to minimize the risk of dental issues.

Post-Holi Dental Care: Restoring Your Smile

Once the festivities are over, it’s time to focus on post-Holi dental care to restore your smile’s brightness. Start by gently brushing your teeth to remove any remaining color residue. Avoid vigorous brushing or harsh toothpaste, as this can further damage your enamel, which may already be weakened by exposure to colors.

Consider using a mouthwash containing fluoride to strengthen your enamel and protect against cavities. Additionally, schedule a follow-up dental appointment to address any lingering concerns and ensure that your teeth are in optimal condition.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while Holi is a time for joy and celebration, it’s essential to prioritize dental care to safeguard your smile. By following these dental tips, you can enjoy a colorful and vibrant Holi while maintaining a bright and healthy smile for years to come.

Unplanned Smile Design

Introduction

In the realm of dentistry, smile design is a delicate art that blends science with aesthetics to craft a perfect smile for every patient. However, what happens when a seemingly routine case takes an unexpected turn? Dr. Swetha U, of Platina Dental Clinic, encountered such a scenario with a 26-year-old female patient who presented with gum bleeding, swelling, and pain in her upper and lower front teeth. What followed was a journey of diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately, the restoration of not just dental health but also a confident smile.

Case History

The patient had previously sought treatment at a familiar clinic, where root canal procedures were performed on all her incisors. It is not sure why her chief complaint of bleeding gums and swollen gums was completely ignored. However, her symptoms persisted, leading her to seek further assistance from Dr. Swetha U.

Examinations

In the initial clinical examination, her gums were reddish in color, would bleed just by touching. Thorough clinical and radiological examinations, including an OPG Full Mouth X-Ray were undertaken.

Diagnosis

The Digital OPG X-Ray which was taken uncovered the underlying issue: faulty root canal treatments in all upper and lower incisors. Dr. Swetha and her team were left completely surprised and heartfelt at the condition of the root canals.

Consultation

Dr. Swetha took her time with the patient by explaining her what needs to be done. She took the time to slowly expose the fact of the botched root canals. Upon hearing about the botched root canal treatment, the patient was completely in tears. Dr. Swetha and her team consoled her repeatedly and assured her that they can fix everything. This case was going to be a unplanned and unnecessary smile design treatment. The consultation took more than 2 hours, but keeping the patient’s plight in mind, Dr. Swetha stuck to her and laid out a simple but effective treatment plan.

Treatment Approach

Dr. Swetha U devised a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to the patient’s unique needs. Initial steps included scaling, root planing, and laser periodontal therapy to address the bleeding gum issues. A thorough session on how to maintain oral hygiene was given to the patient including how to brush and how to rinse. A review was undertaken after 15 days. Not surprisingly, the Laser treatment has worked wonders and conscious maintenance of the oral hygiene by the patient resulted in complete stoppage of the bleeding from the gums.

When Dr. Swetha checked her and confirmed this, the patient was overjoyed and ecstatic By now she had pulled up the courage to go for the second leg of the treatment, which was Re-Root Canal Treatments. The Re-root canal treatment were performed on the affected teeth (11,12,21,22,31,32,41,42). Dr. Swetha and her team, took their time with the Re-Root Canal Treatments and ensured they got it perfectly. All the Re-Root Canal Treatments were completely successful. This was followed by the placement of zirconia crowns to restore both functionality and aesthetics.

Prognosis and Follow-up

The patient’s satisfaction with the treatment outcome was evident, as all dental and gum issues were successfully resolved, culminating in a corrected smile. A follow-up schedule of once every six months was established to ensure the long-term maintenance of oral health.

Conclusion

Dr. Swetha U’s adept handling of this challenging case not only resolved the patient’s dental concerns but also reaffirmed the transformative power of meticulous diagnosis and tailored treatment in smile design. This case serves as a testament to the importance of continuous learning and adaptability in the field of dentistry, where each patient presents a unique puzzle waiting to be solved.

Various options to replace a missing tooth?
1. Dental implants
2. Dental bridges
3. Dentures
4. Do Nothing

1. Dental Implant
Who is eligible for dental implant? Any age group is eligible for dental implants unless that person has healthy gums and underlying bone & except the age group is below 18 yrs.

What is Dental Implant? Dental Implant is a titanium screw placed directly into the jawbone to replace and restore the functionality and appearance of the missing tooth. It supports the crowns, bridges, dentures etc. Dental Implant consists of a dental implant body, an abutment and may also include an abutment fixation screw. It is usually made up of titanium or zirconium oxide others like gold alloys, cobalt-based alloys, or ceramic materials. Bio-compatible and does not cause any irritation or allergic reaction and are safe.

How is an Implant Placed? Dental Implant is surgically inserted in the jawbone in place of the tooth’s root. The abutment is attached to the implant body by the abutment fixation screw and extends through gums into the mouth to support the artificial dental crown. Vital structures (like maxillary sinus, mental nerve & inferior alveolar nerve) near where implant is to be placed should be evaluated carefully by CBCT during surgery. After implant body placement, 3-6 months’ time period is given to the implant and bone to undergo Osseo-integration (bone deposition around the implant). After the necessary radiographic interpretation abutment screw is placed to the implant body and a Dental crown is given which can be cemented or screw retained.

Is Dental Implant painful? No, it doesn’t cause pain as it is done under local anesthesia. – Who is not eligible for Implant? Age group below 18yrs, and people with unhealthy gums and underlying bone are not eligible for Implant. Uncontrolled diabetes. Poor oral hygiene. Chronic smoking habit (healing process is affected and decrease the long-term success of the implant).

2. Dental Bridge
Dental Bridge is a replacement option for missing tooth which is done by taking the support of one or more adjacent teeth. – How is it done? This procedure involves crown cutting of the adjacent teeth if the teeth are in normal condition, if not, RCT has to be done along with the crown cutting for insertion of the dental bridge which consists of pontic (replaces missing tooth) and abutments, where crowns are placed on the prepared teeth.

3. RPD
A removable partial denture is a denture for a partially edentulous patient who desires to have replacement teeth for functional or aesthetic reasons. RPD is usually not desired because of the high maintenance and also the comfort factor.

4. Do nothing!
Why we should not do anything? Doing nothing will result in the – Opposing tooth to move towards the missing tooth space which causes improper bite and malocclusions. – Surrounding teeth migrates towards the space created by the missing teeth. These are un-desirable and hence it is best to opt for one of the 3 options for missing teeth replacement from above.

Before choosing any options it is mandatory to consult our Dentist Dr. Swetha at Platina Dental KPHB. Each case is unique and needs special attention by a qualified dentist before undergoing treatment.
